Bought this to use as a second mic on a high gain guitar rig. After many reviews and listening tests over the net I basically went with this mic without having one physically to test myself. Taking the chance was worth it as this mic has given me the sound I was looking for in a 2 mic setup for the high gain sound. The main use for me is rock rhythms, licks, and solos and it adds some body, and a slightly compressed sound to the guitar which is nice on it’s own (slightly mellow on the high end), but really comes into focus when used with a Beta 57 or Sennheiser e906 combo. Have now had the chance to try it for a clean guitar sound as well and it was my preferred single mic when compared to a 57, Beta 57, and Sennheiser e906. Can’t wait to try it in different applications now. Worth the small investment.
Tech –
This is a great mic. When I first got it I tried it at various distances on a cranked guitar amp.The mic is legendary for a reason. If you are a classic rocker you’ll recognize it’s sound immediately.It’s great on it’s own or paired with other mics like a 57 or 421.It’s also fantastic for certain vocals and the spoken word. You can use distance ( proximity effect) to control the ample low end to your advantage. On my voice, it sounds soulful like every smooth jazz DJ on the radio, and believe me, I don’t normally sound like that! You can use a pop filter to help protect the mic from plosives and air bursts, which are the enemy of most ribbon mics. It’s great on snare, drums, overheads, certain brass instruments and as a room mic. Just be careful to protect it from impact or phantom power which will damage it.Sure, it’s a specific mic with a specific sound, but it’s a great sound. For me it was a great choice.

A great mic though limited-purpose given its coloring of sound. Is excellent for mic’ing an overdriven guitar amp if you’re looking for a crunchy, thick late 60’s sound. Great for mic-ing percussion if, again you’re looking for a crunchy, thick and punchy sound. If you’re looking for clarity, definition or crisp balanced response through the whole frequency spectrum, this is not the right mic-try a good condenser mic.

I pair this mic with a SM57 for close mic’ing a guitar cab. I then blend the two tracks and bus out to effects. If I want more highs I blend more of the SM57. If I need a warmer tone I blend more of the M160. After reading an article about Eddie Kramer (Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, etc..) he uses three mics, SM57, MD421 and M160 in a close pattern which I have tried and the tone possibles are almost endless. An Excellent mic don’t hesitate to purchase.

While the listing was for a Beyerdynamic microphone with the model number M160, what we received were Martin M160 guitar strings which we definitely did not want or intend to purchase. The image on the listing was the mic and everything about the description lead us to believe it was also. Total scam.
