This Roland Duo-Capture EX USB audio interface does all that is claimed for it, with 24bit AD/DA conversion at rates of 48KHz and 44.1KHz..
It works well on my W7P laptop with the driver supplied on the Roland CD-ROM and talks with the PC’s Audio IO as a proper system device for both In and Out on two channels. Using the free download of Ableton software I was able to digitise a bass guitar on channel 1 and an old (but still superb) Calrec 48V phantom powered microphone on channel 2.
It has two analogue balanced input channels each with a dual connector (XLR + 1/4″ TRS jack) and a sensitivity control. The Channel 1 has a high impedance option on the jack for instruments such as guitar. The XLR inputs have the option of +48V phantom power (to both or neither) and can handle nominal input signals from -60dBu to -12dBu, and the TRS jacks are from -46dBu to +2dBu. I have set these two inputs as the default audio input on the PC, but for other applications when the Roland is not connected I have reverted to the usual settings.
It has two balanced analogue output channels on 1/4″ TRS jacks as well as a headphone jack. The output volume control works on all three. Windows Media Player (and other sources) will send sound through the Roland output if this is selected a default output on the PC, but for other applications when the Roland is not connected I have reverted to the usual settings.
The Ableton software (900MB download, 1.4GB on PC) is comprehensive, even only as the free Live v.9.6.1 (Lite) enabled by the serial number on the sheet enclosed in the packaging. As a complete beginner with this software I was able to lay down a couple of tracks after only half an hour from installation thanks to studying the very useful on-screen tutorials embedded within the package.
I’ve not yet tried my trusty old Casio CT460 Midi keyboard to see if it is compatible, but the DIN connectors are wired the same so I hope it should be OK. I’ve also not yet tried to power the Duo with an external
PSB-1U 9V mains brick
nor internal batteries (eats them too fast), but these options are available if needed.
Everything I have tried with the Roland and the software has worked beautifully. I can see myself spending far too much time enjoying this new venture.
