I have used Bluetooth headsets since they were first introduced. I work out doors as a marine technician in south Florida, I kill a headset roughly every 3 months.
I have 3 main requirements for a headset to even be considered.
    1) Working in the marine mechanics is very noisy so noise reduction is a must
    2) I require total hands free answering with incoming call announcement
    3) It needs to be comfortable enough to stay in my ear for 12 hours a day but not fall out. I really hate the “over the ear” hangers as I normally have sunglasses on as well.

1)Given that the Jabra steel works very well in the noise reduction department, the “wind cover” is a nice addition when working in windy conditions it makes a huge difference.
    2) the hands free and incoming call announcement is the best I have used to date with one caveat. When the voice announces incoming calls by names more often than not I have no idea who has called as the pronunciation is WAY off.
    3) Fit is where the headset loses a star. There is not an earpiece included in the package that will stay in my ear all day, it has fallen out several times and requires regular refitting into my ear. And it’s not summer yet, added summer sweat I’m afraid will render it unusable for my application. Sad because I can live with the rest.

Maybe Jabra can offer some silicone ear gels as an add on, if I can get to stay in my ear I will learn how it pronounces my incoming client calls.

Update, 11/9/17 after almost 18 months this thing is a BEAST!!, it has been dropped in saltwater, gasoline etc. more times than I can count. I found a set of ear gels form another lesser headset (command one) and with that this is by far the best headset I have ever owned. I have been using Bluetooth since they came out, no other can touch it. Yes the incoming volume is a little weak but after this long I have learned to deal with it. Great job Jabra!!!

Without a doubt, the JABRA STEEL should be a benchmark on how headsets are built. Its rugged design has made it a dependable, every-day carry, the importance and critical nature of being connected definitely redefined by the STEEL.

I’m using this unit for a few months now, I have to say it’s the best I’ve bought so far I had the plantronics before, yes the sound quality was a bit better but they give up on me in the middle of the day, I work in construction…. So my headset is working with me under rain, snow, mud, dust, sparks and lots of sweat, I’m installing heating and air conditioning units, boilers specifically, if you have an idea of the dirty water and the cutting involve in it you have an idea of what this little headset goes through, and I can talk easily all day 9/10 hours, no problem.

Given all the bad reviews I felt I needed to do one for this. I’m a tech consultant so I live on the go. I have a nerve issue at my elbow that causes my hand to go numb after 10 minutes of holding a phone to my ear so I have used a lot of bluetooth headsets. This one was to replace a lost Moto Whisper.

This unit so far works fine for me. I really wish the audio was louder, but I have that issue with all headsets. I think its funny that you can go to a club or movie theater and the audio is so loud you can’t even think, but your phone gives you a warning if you turn it higher than some lawyer thinks it should go. Its maybe a touch louder than my Moto was. I really think this is a phone issue not a headset issue. I can still hear in the airports and other noise areas.

Bluetooth range seems about normal as well. Beyond this I will say that I like the button placement. Most of the units I have used like to put the buttons right over the ear entrance. So when you push on the button it shoves the unit into your ear. This one is off set so you don’t get that issue. I so love the mute button as well. Lack of audio controls is odd, but I like it. If you don’t know bluetooth call audio is in sync with the phone. Unlike music audio where the headset and phone are independent. I always have mine at max so I never used the audio controls anyway.

Lastly I will say this is the first headset I could use without the ear loop. I hate ear loops as they are impossible to deal with in pockets. I hate the unit following out of my ear more so I use them. Very happy this one will stay in my ear without it.

All things considered, its a good unit and I will not be returning it.

If you like to use voice recorder apps, you’re probably familiar with how noise cancellation affects any silence skip features. You don’t want dead time in your recordings, and so the headset’s ability to cancel out background noise when you’re not talking, and then not have to hear that during replay, is very important.

This headset seems to do a decent job of that. Generally it skipped most silence up into the 40-45 mph range on the road. It may be on par with the Sennheiser Presence (which generally didn’t manage to cancel enough noise at highway speeds for silence skip to work). With any luck it will last longer than those, as usually those have died for me within 2-5 months after getting one.

Comfort is good–not as good as the Sennheiser, but close. It’s not as easy to put into my ear, but not bad either.

The on/off button is inconveniently located on the inside of the headset, so it’s awkward to press while having it in your ear to actually hear that you turned it on. And since you have to hold it for a few seconds, it’s not as clear that you got it turned on. Of course, if your eyes are free (like not on the road) then you can just look at the indicator lights, which are placed a little too close to the power button.

Sound quality seems fine to me. This set does pick up a decent bit of background noise, but not too loudly. I have a Plantronics M165 that must have a full-on condenser microphone–if I’m not talking, you can seriously hear my socks walking on carpet. It’s very hard to get usable silence skip out of the M165 for that reason. The Jabra Steele seems to pick up background noise more loudly than the Sennheiser, but after a little adjustment to the settings in my recording app (Easy Voice Recorder Pro for Android), it did a reasonable job.

I haven’t tried the voice recognition yet. The battery life seems fine so far; it would be great if it had a voice indicator of talk time when you turned it on. All I get is a brief screen notification of battery level %.

Overall I think this could be the best Bluetooth headset I’ve had to date.

05-19-2019 UPDATE: A few things I’ve noticed in using this for longer:

In the car, it seems to identify the noise level and turn that to silence quickly, so after you get to highway speed, it only records 1-2 seconds and then stops. On the highway it won’t pick up turn signals. However, while stopped, it often will pick up turn signals. Overall this is a step up from the Sennheiser on the noise reduction front, I think.

One minor annoyance is that the silicone earpiece comes off in my pocket frequently (a few times a week, probably). It’s not too big an issue, but when I get into the car, I try to get the headset out and set it aside before I’ll need it (which is a good idea anyway, especially if you’re expecting a call). Again, it’s a minor issue, just something to be aware of. Silicone stretches nicely so it’s easy to put back on.
