I needed an inexpensive audio interface for mobile recordings. This was a bit of a stretch for my budget, but the alternatives within my price range ($80-120) didn’t meet my needs (lack of ins/outs, lack of phantom power). I also purchased this based on the description – it shows that this interfaces includes a copy of Cubase Elements or Cubase LE/AI.

Unfortunately, I never received a copy of Cubase and instead, received a license for Pro Tools Express (or whatever their beginner version is called). While this is appreciated, I purchased this because it met my needs and also came with a copy of the DAW of my choice. I removed one star from my rating as I was looking forward to Cubase.

The UM2 is something I would recommend to someone who simply cannot spend more than $30. Otherwise, the M-Audio or the Mackie Onyx are great value at around $88. The Scarlett 2i2 is very good, but at $160 I don’t think it is worth it.

The build quality of the M-Audio 2×2 is great, nothing feels cheap or flimsy. The dials have good resistance, the cables plug in snugly. The sound quality is very good at up to 80% gain. The sound floor becomes noticeable when close to maximum gain. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase.

I needed a new audio interface to do mixing and mastering work as my client’s tracks were all in 88.2khz and weirdly enough my old 16 channel Presonus Studiolive board that’s served me well for years(bought for almost 900 bucks) can’t handle that high of a sample rate playback output (go figure). Set up for the M-track was quick and easy just plug and play to my MacBook Pro, no drivers required. This thing looks sleek as well and the knobs and pots have some resistance to them and don’t feel cheaply made. I can see this holding up for awhile and is pretty future proof with the USB-C connections. If you’re looking for a good place to start in the mixing and mastering world go with this. I will say however I haven’t done a test recording with this yet but will soon for fun but being that it only has one XLR and one instrument 1/4inch output is kind of a buzz kill but that’s really not why I bought it, this was more for playback of my studio monitors at a higher sample rate and it did just that for less than 100 bucks.

    Pros:
    – Great design and build quality (knob fell premium and connections are really tight with no wobble but that might come with time)

    – Very good sound, specially for that price
    – Uses USB-C (just a great connector, like it way more than the B version my Behringer mixer used or a micro-b)

    Bad:
    – No bass, mid , trebble control.
    – Wish it came with a 6 foot cable
    – Intelcom left the package in front OF A BUSINESS ON A WEEKEND with no notification to me so it got stolen. Amazon shipped me a new one overnight (did not remove a star for that, its not m-audio’s fault if intelcom left my stuff on the street)

Save your money, if you are using this as an XLR in. If you are using it for monitor outs, go ahead its only good for that.

I had to get it my M-Track 2×2 replaced in the first month of owning it. It was a horrible experience two weeks for RMA response and another three weeks for the replacement. It’s been three months since I got my new *working* interface from their RMA support. This one too is broken. The XLR in has three settings: inaudibly quiet, audible but still quiet, and EAR PIERCING COMPRESSED MUFFLING LOUD.

Straight will only work when it wants to on windows on the inputs.

This is most likely to a power delivery problem were the interface can not deliver enough power to the XLR from its usb input. I have tried plugging it into my 5v and 12v ports, the 5v is softer as expected but not by much.

The outs for the monitors on the back are fine. Minimal to no noticeable lag, in fact that’s all I would use it for, a monitor interface.

However the headphone 1/8th jack on the front sounds very compressed. Now that could be my headsets but it did seem to compress audio and make it hard to hear voices without focusing on what the words were saying. My computer states it can go to 196kz @ 32bit but as to how true it can output that audio should be taken with a huge grain of salt.

The usb C port is usb 2 speeds and power delivery.

There is a knob for direct feedback and usb input mix. That does work fine.

The left audio track is XLR in the right track is 1/8th in.

One stars for only doing one of its jobs when it feels like it.

Very useful recording device. For the life of me, I can’t seem to get the main giant volume knob to actual do anything, but the rest of the hardware works great and I can record perfectly even without that knob. Setup with a PC was a little confusing to get things working at a specific bitrate and frequency. But the M-Track 2x2M does a great job of offering latency-free recording.

I’m very happy with this unit. Solid build, surprisingly large and hefty, but still compact enough for a desktop and a backpack. Setup was easy, just a quick download and everything was running perfectly. The connections are snug, so once you’re connected you’ll stay connected; instrument level circuits via the front jacks, and mic level via the rear jacks. The inclusion of a dB scale with the levels meters is a nice touch also. For the price (about $150) it is great value compared to what else is on the market in this range.

This unit works well for a simple audio setup. The pre-amps are very good for this price range. Good clear transparent bass not muddy at all. The mid range could be a little more subtle but the highs are very well defined, clean and crisp without biting. I set this up with q-base and immediately upgraded for 50 euros from the base version. The software was installed in 10 minutes and worked straight out of the box. I’ve played my Gibson lesPaul, fender strat, takemine through the high Z input and my röde nt1 through the the mic input. Tons of headroom for metering. The latency is noticeable but you can dial enough of it out with the direct/USB dial. Bit tricky to get used to but a very useful tool. The A/D converters do a very good job. I wasn”t able to produce any glitches by reducing the buffer size but I am running a pretty fast I7 quad core. All in all this set up is no neve or SSL but for this kind of money and the software kit included you really can’t go wrong. A röde nt1 for an astounding 180,00 Euros and your good to go. I would pay more for this kind of quality.
