This mic blocks sound from the back REALLY WELL. For example, it’s great if you are trying to record music being played live on a stage, and you don’t want all the crowd noise behind you to be recorded.
On the other hand, if you are using it to vlog, you have to talk louder than normal if you’re behind the mic, otherwise your voice will come in soft.
In comparison, the much more expensive Rode Video Mic Pro and Pro+ mics are good at picking up sound from the front and the rear, while rejecting sound only from the side. But they pick up sound well from the rear which make them great for vlogging, if you don’t mind the larger size and having to use a battery.
In any case, this Rode VideoMicro mic is literally one of the best condenser mics you can buy at any price when it comes to blocking sound from the rear. I’ve used dozens of condenser mics all the way up to $1,000 mics and very few are as good at blocking sound from the rear. (Dynamic mics are better at blocking sound from the rear, but they are a completely different kind of mic.)
As far as condenser mics go that can be used for vlogging, the only vlogging mic as good as this one at blocking sound from the rear is the much more expensive Sennheiser MKE 440.
Long story short, this Rode VideoMicro is a bargain. Small, cheap, sounds pretty good, comes with a shock mount and a windscreen, and no battery needed. It’s a really good deal!

Die Ersatzlieferung ist gestern eingetroffen. Lob an amazon, sehr schneller, problemloser Service.
Schon beim “Zusammenbau” fällt auf, dass die Aufhängung diesmal nicht knackst und das Aufstecken deutlich leichter geht als beim ersten Rode. Ob das nun Fertigungstoleranzen sind, oder das erste Micro schon mal in Verwendung war… wer weiss.
Beim Schnelltest mit der FZ1000, gefilmt aus der Hand mit viel Bewegung fällt auf, dass kein knarzen mehr zu hören ist. Die Zoom- und Stabigeräusche sind gleich wie beim ersten Videomicro, aber die schlimmen Störgeräusche sind weg. Da war wohl das defekte Kabel der ersten Lieferung der Übeltäter. Bis auf die windige Aufhängung und das unzureichende dämpfen der Zoom- und Stabigeräusche, sowie der Umgebungsgeräusche, bin ich bisher sehr zufrieden mit dem Rode. Für den Preis ist die Verarbeitungsqualität des Micros und der Deadcat super, die “kleine Größe” macht das Micro sehr mobil durch die nicht nötige Batterie ist die Anwendung auch leicht und problemlos
Nachtrag 1:************
Das Rode läßt mir keine Ruhe und ich habe heute nochmal einige Einstellungen besonders an der FZ1000 vorgenommen um das Micro verwenden zu können.
vorläufiges Ergebnis:
Das größte Problem des Rode ist weiterhin das Kabel und die Aufhängung. Verwendet man das Micro getrennt von diesen Teilen, dann ist es für den Preis wirklich sehr gut.
Notlösung:
Das Kabel wird wie auf der Abbildung an der Blitzschuschraube eingeclipst, wobei die Abbildung ein Fake ist. Das gerade Kabel bis zur Spirale ist deutlich kürzer. In Realität steht die Aufhängung unter Spannung wenn es knapp vor der Spirale eingehängt wird. Damit wird die Aufhängung in ihrer eh schon starren Ausgleichsbewegung noch mehr eingeschränkt.
Das restliche Kabel wird dann um den Blitzschuh gewickelt und in die Buchse geführt. So kann das Kabel nicht mehr scheuern und liegt eng am Kameragehäuse an.
Übrigens mein Rodekabel ist defekt, es hat einen Wackelkontakt.
Ein 80 Cent Billigkabel ließ die weiteren Tests erfolgreich durchführen.
Bei den sehr hohen Preisen die Rode für Ihre Kabel aufruft ein absolutes Nogo 🙁
Das Ergebnis:
Fast keine Knarz- und gar keine Scheuergeräusche mehr, selbst wenn ich die Kamera intensiv bewege. Wind macht dem Kabel auch keine Probleme mehr, jede Berührung aber schon (ist bei anderen Micros genauso)
Für die FZ1000 ergeben sich nach vielen Pegelvarianten inzwischen akzeptable Aufnahmen, die restlichen Zoom- und Stabigeräusche kann ich weitgehend mit Software eliminieren.
Somit ist das Rode auch für einige Szenarien mit der FZ1000 nutzbar und ich erhöhe die Wertung auf 3 Sterne.
Die gleichen Tricks an der Sony A7II und den Canons angewandt (exakte Pegelung ist sehr wichtig), ergeben auch hier gute Audioaufnahmen. Ander Sony und der 5DIII sind die Ergebnisse am besten.
Inzwischen ist das Rode fürs Filmen aus der Hand sinnvoll einsetzbar, unter den Einschränkungen eines Shotgunmicros. Besser als die internen Micros, schlechter als aufwendigere Settings.
Für schnelle Youtubeshots, spontane Shootings, freies Drehen ohne Riesenaufwand ist das Micro gut geeignet.

Ich habe heute das Rodemic erhalten auf das ich mich riesig gefreut habe. Ein kleines Richtmikrofon mit Puschel für meine Kameras um damit einen besseren Ton beim filmen aus der Hand zu erhalten.
Schon mal vorweg… das war wohl nix.
Ein paar Infos zum geplanten Einsatzbereich und den Vorerfahrungen.
Ich filme mit verschiedenen DSLR’s, Spiegellosen und einer Bridgekamera, Beiträge für Youtube. Dazu verwende ich hauptsächlich Laveliermikros, über Kabel direkt in die jeweilige Kamera, oder in Aufnahmerekorder wie Zoom, Philips und auch in Iphone und Androidhandys. Eine Funkstrecke von AKG kommt gelegentlich auch zum Einsatz.
Wie bekannt sein dürfte sind die internen Kameramikros eher für die Tonne.
Ich stand nun vor dem Problem, unter anderem, meine Enkelin incl. Familienumfeld filmen zu wollen und das mit eben meinen verschiedenen Kameras.
Die internen Mikros sind keine Option, da alle zu schlecht sind für solche Einsätze. Besonders das Mikro der FZ1000 ist eher Deco als brauchbar. Die FZ1000 nimmt am liebsten ihre Eigengeräusche auf, den internen Stabi und den Motorszoom, andere Töne auch, aber eher untergeordnet. Dafür sind aber die Videoaufnahmen ein Gedicht und die Zoomoptik ist extrem flexibel und sehr gut, 4K ist auch nicht von schlechten Eltern und die Ergonomie ist im Vergleich zu den Sonys ein Traum.
Das Rode war hauptsächlich für diese Allrounderkamera angeschafft worden.
Zum Rode Videomic:
Die Lieferung war, typisch amazon, schnell, die Verpackung perfekt, meine Vorfreude groß.
Beim Auspacken war ich vom Mikro selbst erst mal begeistert. Hochwertige Verarbeitung, alles aus Metall, wertiger Eindruck. Auch der beiliegende Puschel macht einen tollen Eindruck sowie das rote Kabel.
Weniger toll ist die mitgelieferte Aufhängung. Diese wirkt sehr filigran (um nicht billig und minderwertig zu sagen), das Plastik ist sehr dünn und hart. Der Eindruck… die hält keine 2 Tage durch… Auch die “Federung” wirkt nicht sonderlich vertrauenerweckend, aber gut, gib dem Ganzen eine Chance.
Der Zusammenbau war schon tricky. Beim Einführen des Mikros in die Aufhängung hat es schon bedenklich geknarzt und bestätigt den minderwertigen Eindruck. Auch der dünne Blitzschuhaufsatz und die windige Plastikschraube lassen einen schwitzen.
Der erste Test auf der Lumix FZ1000:
Micro auf den Blitzschuh, angesteckt, FZ gestartet, Ton eingepegelt und ein Selfivideo gedreht. Schon am Pegelausschlag der FZ konnte man erkennen, das wohl nicht nur die Stimme aufgenommen wird.
Beim Abhören bestätigte sich dann die Befürchtung. Der Ton war miserabel, ständiges Rauschen, Knarzen, volle Lautstärke des elektrischen Zooms und des Stabis. Das hörte sich schlimmer an als das miese interne Mikro.
Die Vermutung: Da hat die Kamera wohl nicht das Rode aufgenommen sondern das interne Micro.
Alles gecheckt und ein Vergleichsvideo ohne Rode aufgenommen. Die Aufnahme war etwas leiser, aber genauso unbrauchbar.
Also das Rode wieder angesteckt und mit verschieden Einstellungen und Pegeln experimentiert.
Das Ergebnis war immer sehr schlecht, wenn man die Kammera in der Hand hielt und diese bewegte. Jeder Kontakt zum Mikrokabel erzeugte laute Knarzer, Jede schnelle Bewegung der Kamera ebenso.
Stellt man die Kamera auf ein Stativ mit etwa 1,5 m zum Sprecher, dann nimmt das Rode wenigsten nur den Stabi und den Zoom mit dem Sprecher auf. Das ist die einzige Situation in der das Rode einigermaßen brauchbar wäre, man muß halt dann das Rode von der Kamera trennen… sehr sinnvoll 🙁
Auf der FZ1000 ist das Rode in jeder Situation einfach nur sinnlos und schlecht.
Gut dann starten wir mal einen Test mit den anderen Kameras ohne Stabi und ohne Motorzoom.
Nacheinander wurde das Rode an einer Sony A7II, einer Canon 550D, einer 700D, einer 5D MarkII und einer 5D Mark III getestet.
Jedes mal am Stativ mit 1,5 m Entfernung zu mir als Selfie und in der Hand gehalten in einer normalen Filmsituation, in der die Kamera geschwenkt und bewegt wurde.
Der ganze Test einmal drinnen im Büro und draussen im Garten, teilweise windig, teilweise windstill.
Ein Freund half bei dem ausführlichen Test und spendete seine 5DII und die Sony A7II.
Das Ergebnis:
Im Büro auf dem Stativ:
mit dem Rode auf der Kamera, jede Kamera manuell ausgepegelt, Abstand 1,5 m zum Sprecher, ohne Einstellungen an der Kamera wie Schärfe oder Zoom während des Filmens, war das Rode wirklich sehr gut. Mit Hall und schlechter als ein Laveliermikro, aber wirklich gut, selbst an der 550D und vor allem an der 700D.
Die FZ1000 wurde nicht mehr in den Test einbezogen, dafür ist das Rode komplett ungeeignet.
Im Büro aus der Hand gefilmt:
Schärfe und Focus wurden manuell angepasst während des Filmens:
Selbst kleinste Bewegungen mit der Kamera führen zu Störungen im Ton wie Knarzen, Rauschen, Schabern. Zoom- und Fokusänderungen wurden je nach Objektiv deutlich mit aufgenommen, mal mehr mal weniger.
Der Ton ist damit absolut unbrauchbar.
Im Garten:
Windstill auf dem Stativ, sonst wie erste Situation.
Der Ton hat keinen Hall und ist bei Stille, außer dem Sprecher, sehr gut. Bei Nebengeräuschen, wie vorbeifahrenden Autos oder Stapfen im Schnee, werden diese deutlich hörbar mit aufgenommen.
Im Garten bei Wind:
Auf dem Stativ, sonst wie erste Situation:
Der Ton hat wieder keinen Hall, aber Nebengeräusche sind deutlich hörbar. Seltsamerweise nicht die typischen Windgeräusche sondern wieder Knarzen und Schabern. Die Deadcat scheint gut zu arbeiten, der Rest aber nicht.
Ergebnis: auch dieser Ton ist unbrauchbar.
Aus der Hand gefilmt im Büro:
Mit viel Bewegungen, wie Umkreisen des Sprechers, ändern des Abstandes zum Sprecher, zoomen, Schärfe anpassen am Objektiv.
Der Ton ist hallig, ständig Störgeräusche wie oben, Zoom- und Schärfeeinstellungen sind hörbar. Dazu kommt noch die ständige Änderung der Aufnahmelautstärke wenn man den Abstand zum Sprecher ändert, beim Umkreisen ist der Sprecher kaum noch zu verstehen, die Störgeräusche aber umso deutlicher.
Ergebnis: auch dieser Ton ist unbrauchbar.
Aus der Hand gefilmt im Freien:
Man kann es sich denken, es wurde nicht besser sondern noch schlechter….
Dieser Ton ist absolut unbrauchbar.
Ursachenforschung:
Nach langem diskutieren, woher diese miserable Tonqualität denn jetzt kommt haben wir auf die kurze Testzeit erstmal folgende Ursachen erwogen:
1. Die Aufhängung ist … billigster sinnloser Humbug. Das Material ist viel zu starr, das Plastik zu hart um eine entkoppelnde Wirkung zum zeigen. Man kann das Mikro auch gleich auf den Blitzschuh kleben, das Ergebnis wäre wohl ähnlich. Zudem dürfte diese minderwertige Teil im Alltagseinsatz nicht lange überleben. So ein Murks macht einen richtig zornig.
2. Das Kabel ist ebenfalls zu starr und scheuert am Gehäuse oder schlackert bei Bewegung der Kamera und verursacht bei jedem Kontakt zu jedwedem Material in der Nähe dieses Knarzen und Scheuern, welches sich in jeder bewegten Aufnahme findet. Selbst Wind, der das Kabel trifft, verursacht Geräusche in der Aufnahme.
Hier wäre eine Entkopplung der Mirobuchse und ein weicheres Kabel wohl ein Lösungsansatz. Bei den extrem hohen Preisen von Rodekabeln wäre eine 2 Cent Aufwertung des Kabels wohl noch drin.
3. Die Richtwirkung des Mikros sollte verstärkt werden. Es werden viel zu viele Nebengeräusche mit aufgenommen.
Fazit:
Das Rode ist in Summe eine große Enttäuschung für mich.
Für die FZ1000 ist das Mikro komplett ungeeignet.
Für die Canons, die Sony und die kurz getesteten Camcorder ist es nur sinnvoll für Aufnahmen auf dem Stativ mit festem Focus, fest eingestellter Brennweite und bei immer gleichem Abstand zum Sprecher.
Dafür brauche ich das Rode aber nicht, denn dafür habe ich, unter anderem, ein Smartlav+ mit Verlängerung und diverse Aufnamerekorder. Zudem ist die Tonqualität mit den Laveliers deutlich besser, nur der Schnitt ist bei mehr als einem Sprecher aufwendiger.
Der ganze Test hat uns heute 6 Stunden gekostet mit einem enttäuschenden Ergebnis. Ob ein Rode mit Gain, also mit Batterie besser wäre muss man erst probieren. Von Rode bin ich erst mal enttäuscht. Nach der guten Erfahrung mit dem Smatlav+ und den teuren, aber guten Kabeln und Adaptern, ist das leider weniger schön.
Bevor ich das Rode spontan zurücksende werde ich noch einige Szenarien durchprobieren um es doch noch einsetzen zu können, denn die Verarbeitungsqualität des Mikros und des Puschels, die angenehme Größe und die Haptik sind doch sehr angenehm. Die Aufhängung ist allerdings ein schlechter Witz.

Das ist mir jetzt schon zweimal, bei einer sehr ausführlichen Rezension, passiert. Die Folge wäre, dass viele keine Lust mehr haben Produkte ehrlich zu rezensieren und es nur noch… ” Produgt ser gut, Farrbe toll, kaufen, kaufen, kaufen” zu sehen gibt. I haven’t tested it in loud environments, but from what I’ve experienced so far, it performs admirably.
However, VideoMicro’s performance has limitations beyond a certain distance—beyond approximately 1.5 meters, it isn’t as effective.
One impressive feature is its reliance on the camera’s power due to its compact design, eliminating the need for additional batteries. Simply connect it to the camera using the provided SC2 3.5mm cable, and you’re ready to record hassle-free.
Should you wish to connect the VideoMicro to a smartphone, a separate SC7 cable compatible with TTRS audio jacks, such as those on iPhones and iPads, is necessary. Overall, for its price and functionality, the RODE VideoMicro is a worthy investment, providing commendable audio quality for on-the-go recording without the fuss of extra batteries.

It’s probably been said the world over, but this mic connected to a camera body picks up an audible hiss and it’s one of the most annoying things on the planet.
I was able to get rid of it in both Audacity (noise profile), and Premiere Pro (Denoiser is the best way), but the quality of the mic itself, to me, is a bit sub-par coming from a Yeti. I’ve also owned and used a few higher quality XLR condensers so maybe it’s a bit unfair, but to a trained ear this sound is kinda meh. It’s kind of hollow, thin, and tinny.
My goal was to streamline my setup while I save money for a new camera because I hate transferring my laptop and Yeti into the space where I record (as it requires bus power). I thought this would be a great way to reconcile the issue, and it is, but.. the sound quality is just not good enough for me. This is to be expected at $59, but the fact remains.
I returned this and decided to just get a scissor arm and move my setup into my studio space. Also keep in mind I’m using an old Nikon D3200. Not really meant for video, and it’s a body from probably 2013-2014.
TL;DR – Decent sound quality but can’t use. Build is pretty good. Likely will sound better with a better cam body. I’m sure the more expensive mics in this line are likely better, and I may invest in one down the road once I get an A6400.
